Phone of 2015

Phone of 2015

Indian smartphone manufacturer, Micromax has introduced a new smartphone under ‘Canvas’ family name, Canvas Sliver 5 with stylish ergonomics. It could be the slimmest smartphone of the year 2015 after Gionee Elife S5.1 in 2014. The specifications looks like upgraded compared to that of previous budget version of slimmest smartphones and Gionee Elife S5.1 as well.

Let’s take a look at this ‘slimmest smartphone ever made’, as claimed by the company Micromax and check how sharp the cutting edges were designed to cut-off the competitors.

Design

The design ergonomics outstandingly makes the phone look that slim. Of course Gionee Elife S5.1 was already introduced with the 5.1mm thicknessback in 2014, but Canvas Sliver 5 could be the slimmest phones of the year 2015.

Being made from aircraft grade aluminumCanvas Sliver 5 is not only robust but also light weight. It weights up to 97 grams only. That is very closer to the weight of Gionee Elife S5.1 (97.55 grams).

The metal bezel around the body makes the phone look more thinner i.e.,2.7mm in visual perspective. However, you could hardly feel the phone in your pocket while carrying around.

Display

Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 has a brilliant true HD 4.8 inch AMOLED display which comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It can render 1280x720P resolution on the screen with 8M:1 contrast ratio.

The display uses ‘On cell’ touch responsive technology which contributes to the slimness of the device overall.

Processor & RAM

Canvas Sliver 5 comes with 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad core processor that can run at 1.2GHz clock speed. It is supported by 2GB DDR3 RAM for better multi-tasking and 306 Adreno GPU for better graphics rendering.

The processing power is however lower when compared to the Gionee Elife S5.1’s processor and GPU. The only processing advantage this phone has over Elife S5.1 is the 1GB extra RAM.

Memory

Micromax has put a 16GB built-in ROM in this device that leaves 11.3GBfor user storage and the rest for apps.

Unfortunately, memory cannot be expanded on this device which the company might have thought that this could add up a couple of millimeters for its thickness.

Camera

Canvas Sliver 5 comes with 8MP rear auto focusing camera with LED flashand 75.6 degree wide angle lens. It can even record 1080P videos at 30FPSframe rate. The camera is packed with Sony IMX219 sensor, Largan lensand Blue Glass filter. It increases the clarity of the pictures taken.

It also has a 5MP front facing camera than can take sharp enough selfies and groupies.

Operating System

Canvas Sliver 5 comes equipped with Android Lollipop 5.0.2 operating system. The 5.0.2 version is the better and bug freed version of Lollipop, but yet bugs are being found in day-to-day usage.

Battery

This smartphone comes with 2000mAh high density Lithium Polymerbattery which is a great upset feature of the device. The processor configuration and screen density can hardly hold the battery live for 6 hours if used moderately.

Pros

  • Slim and stylish
  • Light weight
  • Eye catching design
  • Supports 4G LTE (First 4G LTE phone under 100 gms)
  • Good processor and RAM
  • Android lollipop 5.0
  • Gorilla Glass 3 protection

Cons

  • Poor camera
  • Non-expandable memory
  • Weak battery
  • Single SIM
  • Over priced (around 15k INR)

Overall impression

Micromax seems like as if it has put all its efforts to make the device look thinner than making a powerful smartphone. It would be a good phone in hands for those who likes holding a stylish phone in budget range. For those who needs the performing star, Canvas Sliver 5 is not their cup of tea.
